Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between SEO and GEO?
- SEO is about ranking your pages in a search engine such as Google. GEO, generative engine optimization, is about being used and mentioned in the answers that AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity write. The foundations overlap: clear, accurate, well-structured pages from a source that can be trusted. Nobody can promise a particular result in either.
- Is AEO the same as featured snippets?
- Featured snippets are one part of it. AEO, answer engine optimization, means writing so that a search feature, a voice assistant or an AI tool can lift a short, correct answer straight from your page. That usually means a plain question as a heading, followed by a direct answer in the first sentence or two.
- What does AIO stand for?
- It is used for two different things. Some people mean AI optimization, making a whole site and brand easy for AI systems to understand. Others mean Google AI Overviews, the AI summary that appears above some search results. Check which one a person means before you compare notes.
- Do I need all five?
- Not as separate projects. Good SEO is the base, and most of AEO, GEO and AIO is the same work done carefully: clear answers, honest facts, structured data and a consistent name across the web. SXO is the part that turns a visit into an enquiry, so it matters as soon as you have traffic.
- Can anyone guarantee a ranking or an AI mention?
- No. Search engines and AI tools change often and decide for themselves. What you control is the quality, clarity and consistency of what you publish, and whether visitors who arrive can do what they came to do.
